Under the leadership of President of the Republic of Uzbekistan Shavkat Mirziyoyev, a consistent and forward-looking policy is being implemented to strengthen national energy security and ensure the uninterrupted supply of energy resources to all sectors of the economy. In this context, the Head of State reviewed a presentation on the priority objectives and long-term development plans of the joint-stock company Uzbekneftegaz.
The presentation focused on increasing natural gas production volumes, improving operational efficiency, and carrying out a comprehensive transformation of the gas industry. President Mirziyoyev emphasized that reliable energy supply is a key driver of sustainable economic development and outlined clear tasks for the wide-scale introduction of modern technologies and advanced management practices in the sector.
On the President’s initiative, the intensification of geological exploration has been identified as one of the strategic priorities aimed at expanding the country’s resource base and discovering new fields. A recent significant discovery in the Ustyurt region serves as practical confirmation of the effectiveness of this approach.
In particular, a high-pressure, commercially viable flow of natural gas was identified at the Shagirlik – Lower Jurassic exploratory well No. 2, located near the Muynak field. This result once again confirms the high hydrocarbon potential of the region and reflects the correctness of the strategic course defined by the President.
The site was prepared for deep exploratory drilling based on the results of 3D seismic surveys conducted by Uzbekgeophysics JSC and the Institute of Geology and Exploration of Oil and Gas Fields, operating under the Ministry of Mining Industry and Geology. This scientifically grounded approach is fully aligned with the President’s directives on the application of advanced exploration technologies.
Notably, the drilling of the well was carried out by highly qualified specialists of Uzbekneftegaz and its Project Management Office. This office was established on the President’s instruction and is staffed with professionals who have gained practical experience at leading international oil and gas companies.
As of January 10, 2026, the well was drilled to a depth of 5,265 meters. Stable natural gas accumulations were discovered in the Lower Jurassic formations at depths between 5,061 and 5,265 meters. The high reservoir pressure of the gas indicates strong prospects for efficient commercial development.
In line with the comprehensive development objectives set by President Shavkat Mirziyoyev, further geological studies are planned to better understand the structure of the Lower Jurassic layers and to determine the boundaries of the discovered gas accumulations. For this purpose, the drilling of exploratory wells No. 3 and No. 4 is scheduled in the area, which will contribute to further growth in gas production and long-term energy stability.
