F1 (marketed as F1 the Movie) is a 2025 American sports drama film centered on the world of Formula One racing. Brad Pitt stars as Sonny Hayes, a former F1 driver who returns to the sport after a 30-year absence to save his former teammate’s struggling underdog team, APXGP.
The film is directed by Joseph Kosinski, with a screenplay by Ehren Kruger. The creative team previously collaborated with producer Jerry Bruckheimer on the successful film “Top Gun: Maverick.” Supporting roles are played by Damson Idris, Kerry Condon, Tobias Menzies, and Javier Bardem.
The production was handled by Apple Studios, Jerry Bruckheimer Films, Plan B Entertainment, and other companies. Brad Pitt and seven-time Formula One World Champion Lewis Hamilton served as producers, with Hamilton also appearing in the film alongside real F1 teams and drivers.
Principal photography began in summer 2023 at the Silverstone Circuit and continued during actual Formula One Grand Prix weekends throughout the 2023 and 2024 World Championship seasons, in official collaboration with the FIA. Racing sequences were adapted directly from real events, giving the film a strong sense of realism.
The film’s cinematography was led by Claudio Miranda, editing by Stephen Mirrione, and the musical score was composed by Hans Zimmer. In addition to the original score, a separate soundtrack album featuring various artists was released.
“F1” premiered on June 16, 2025, at Radio City Music Hall in New York City. It was released theatrically in the United States on June 27, 2025, by Warner Bros. Pictures and Apple Original Films. The running time of the film is 155 minutes.
With an estimated budget of $200–300 million, the film grossed $631.6 million worldwide. It received positive reviews from critics and became the ninth-highest-grossing film of 2025, the highest-grossing auto racing film of all time, Apple Studios’ most successful release, and the highest-grossing film of Brad Pitt’s career.
The National Board of Review included “F1” in its list of the top ten films of the year, praising its scale, authenticity of racing scenes, and strong performances.
