Following the U.S. military operation in Venezuela, the key question remains the whereabouts of the country’s president, Nicolás Maduro. U.S. authorities stated that Maduro and his wife were captured and taken to New York, where they face charges of narco-terrorism, cocaine trafficking, and illegal weapons possession. However, Maduro has not yet been publicly presented.
The lack of public confirmation has fueled uncertainty and prompted international reactions. A number of countries have described the U.S. actions as a direct violation of Venezuela’s sovereignty and international law.
Russia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs issued a strong statement, calling the events an act of armed aggression. Moscow expressed solidarity with the Venezuelan people and support for a political course aimed at defending national interests. Russia also demanded immediate clarification regarding what it described as the forced removal of Venezuela’s president.
The Russian Foreign Ministry emphasized that its embassy in Caracas remains in constant contact with Venezuelan authorities and Russian citizens in the country. According to available information, no Russian nationals have been injured.
Cuba and Iran also condemned the U.S. operation, calling it a gross violation of Venezuela’s territorial integrity. Tehran urged the UN Security Council to intervene and provide a legal assessment of the situation.
At the regional level, reactions have been more restrained. Colombian President Gustavo Petro said his government rejects aggression against the sovereignty of Venezuela and Latin America and announced the deployment of security forces along the border. He noted that authorities are preparing for a potential influx of refugees.
At the same time, several countries previously considered close allies of Caracas have limited themselves to cautious statements or have remained silent altogether. The reasons for this restraint have not been officially explained.
Brazil’s position remains unknown at the time of publication. Guyanese President Irfaan Ali stated only that a national security plan had been activated, without providing further details.
As a result, the fate of Nicolás Maduro and the future course of events surrounding Venezuela remain unclear, while the international response reflects both strong condemnation and notable silence from some allied nations.
